Top 5 Attractions in Santa Barbara

Sean Bogharyan • Oct 07, 2022

Santa Barbara has always been a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Known for its

mild weather, beautiful beaches and a thriving arts community, Santa Barbara is also home to

some of California's most historic attractions. Whether you're looking to learn about the city's

history or just relax on the beach, these top five attractions will keep you entertained all day

long:

Old Mission Santa Barbara

The Mission Santa Barbara is one of the best preserved Spanish colonial missions in California, and it's a must-see when you're in town. The mission was founded by the Franciscan Order in 1786 to spread Christianity to Native Americans. The original structures were built out of adobe bricks, which have been left exposed at this location for preservation purposes.

Located within walking distance from downtown Santa Barbara, visitors can take advantage of guided tours before or after admiring some of the many architectural details on display inside this historic building. There are two museums inside: one focuses on California's missions with exhibits about their history, artworks created by Native American artists and missionaries; another explores archaeology through its collection of artifacts from throughout California's prehistory (before European contact).

Stearns Wharf

Stearns Wharf is located at the end of State Street and it's a great place to start your trip in Santa Barbara. It's an old wharf that has been renovated into shops, restaurants and attractions. You can see seals on the beach and visit the sea lions in their own habitat. If you want to go fishing or watch some boats sailing on the ocean, this is a perfect spot for you!

If you're hungry, there are plenty of places where you can eat delicious food while enjoying amazing views of the ocean or mountains nearby. Most places offer outdoor seating so that everyone can enjoy their meal while taking in all that nature has to offer us!

You'll find Stearn's Wharf easily by following State Street south until it ends at Cabrillo Boulevard then turning right onto Stearns Wharf Road (or Highway 101 South).

Butterfly Beach

Butterfly Beach is a beautiful place where you can go for a walk, and there are many restaurants nearby. This beach has an amazing view, and there are places where you can surf or just relax on the beach with friends or family.

Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History

The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the price for admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors (65+) and students with ID, $6 for children ages 3–12 and free to children under 3 years old (general admission).

Exhibits include "Lizards & Snakes", "Climate Change", "Fossil Mysteries" and many more! The paleontology exhibits include the Prehistoric Forest which features hand-crafted animatronic replications of dinosaurs to enjoy with your kids!

Lotusland

Lotusland is a botanical garden and home of the world's largest collection of rare and exotic orchids. Located in Montecito, California—just outside Santa Barbara—Lotusland features over 5,000 species of plants. The property was purchased by Frederick Law Olmsted Sr., who designed many significant parks such as Central Park in New York City and Prospect Park in Brooklyn. He then turned to his son Frederick Jr., who helped develop Lotusland into a place of relaxation and reflection.

The gardens at Lotusland are divided into several different sections: The Conservatory Garden (featuring lots of green space), The Waterlily Pool (where you can see some beautiful water lilies), The Main Lawn (which hosts concerts during certain times), Tropical Display Gardens (a series of unique displays featuring tropical plants), Japanese Garden (modeled after traditional Japanese architecture), Orchid Showcase House & Museum (where visitors can see many orchids up close)
